Fragility fracture is a major public health concern affecting millions worldwide. Estimates show that one-third of women and one-fifth of men over the age of 50 years will suffer from a fragility fracture. As the global population increases and ages, the burden of osteoporosis will worsen, affecting patient’s quality of life, increasing economic costs, and resulting in a dynamic increase in the prevalence of osteoporotic fractures.
A key factor contributing to the rampant costs is the positive association between primary fragility fracture event and the risk of secondary fractures. Patients suffering from a fragility fracture today are twice as likely to undergo recurrent fractures in the future compared to peers who have not suffered a fracture. The risk increases if the underlying osteoporosis is not diagnosed, treated and managed appropriately. This phenomenon of one fracture leading to another has been coined as “fracture cascade,” and is a consequence of lack of appropriate post-fracture prevention care.
An effective solution proposed so far to close this gap in secondary fracture prevention is the establishment of Fracture Liaison Services.
This webinar is presented by Prof. Thierry Thomas of Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Saint-Étienne with extensive expertise on post-fracture preventive care.
